PROGRESS OF BILLS.

The House met at 2.30 p.m.

Sir Robert Stout read a telegram which had been received by the Governor from the Governor of New South Wales on the New Hebrides question, to the effect that a French man-of-war had been despatched from Noumea to the New Hebrides.

Replying to a question, it was stated that it was not intended to appoint a police magistrate in Wellington.

NEW BILLS.

The second reading of the Native Land Court Bill was agreed to. The debate on the Gold Duty Export Bill was adjourned till Friday. The Justice of tbe Peace Bill was further censidered in committee.

The House went into Committee of Supply. Treasurer's Department, £6607. — Sir Julius Yogel pointed out an increase of £100 to the Secretary of the Treasury, and smaller items. In answer to questions, he said ho could not see a way to naake'any reductions, which led to a brisk discussion. — Mr Or. F. Richardson moved to strike out the increase' of £100 to the Secretary of the Treasury, and when the motion was put, nearly, a do«en nienibors walked out, and the reduction was by 15 to 9. A. £50 increase was struck off the Assistant Secretary, and the total vote reduced to £6457, and it was then passed. — Some discussion took place on the allowance of £500 to the Agent-General for extra expenditure daring the London Exhibition, but eventually the remainder of the department was voted £48,054 in all. Stamp Department £7,250, Land and Deed Registry £22,725, Commissioner of Trades and Customs £44,266, and Marine and Harbours £33,313, were carried.

Miscellaneous £11,318, including the Hinemoa £6,500, and £3,500 for a new boiler for her, excited a discussion on tho usefulness or otherwise of that vessel. Mr Ormond moved to reduce the vote by £10,000. The House divided — Ayes 18, Noes 14. The vote was accordingly reduced.

Progress was then reported, and the House proceeded to the second reading of Bradshaw's Amendment Bill of Employment of Females Act, which was carried without discussion.
