The following telegram was received from Tauranga by the secretary of the post-office at 2-16 a.m. :— " Loud reports and heavy earthquakes began here, and continued to 5 a.m. Tauranga is in darkness, and thick clouds of sulphurous matter, gypsum, 4c, are in the air. Avokland, This Day. In response to the appeals from Tauranga the S.B. Wellington is just leaving to take off refugees.

The Mayor of Auckland has reoeived a telegram from the Mayor of Tauranga asking that steamers might take off the, residents. A private telegram states that Tauranga was in total darkness at nine o'clock this morning, and the town covered with ashesi The Mayor has replied that he will assist to the best of his ability. Earthquake vibrations wore felt in Auckland, and fissures observed. During the night constant explosions were heard. It was thought that a war vessel had gone ashore on the ManukaU bar. The cause of the explosions was, found to be that a tremendous outburst of volcanic activity occurred in the Botorua distrxot, surpassing^anything hitherto experienced in New Zealand. Violent .eruptions took place, accompanied by. loud explosions; People are fleeing from { the district, but know not where to tuna, ac the country, from Lake Taupo to Tauranga is covered with thick smoke, and is dark as midnight. The Maories and Europeans are rushing about in great excitement. Propnrty of all kinds is completely destroyed. The flashes of fire are plainly visible m Auckland and the suburbs, proving the gigantic nature of the eruption.
