Sir Robert Shout
The Lyttelton Times, in na article on the knighthood of Mr Robert Stout, says j ' mere worthy knight wears- the ," Order of St. Michael aad St. George. : ' : The Premier was modest enough to as- *■ cribe the honour to his position entirely. - it is well for him tp saj so, but die colony, which knows him so well, understands ' that be 'is- -eminently worthy. Had . hi- not been worthy*' he would not, in all • probability, have been found at the head of oar affairs ; had it not been for his fitness for the position of Premier, he would not have been ree- nvnonded by His IKxcellencey for a place' on the list of Birthday Honours. The Sovereign prob « ably had little personal knowledge of him, but Her Majesty's Secretary of '•• State must have known by the despatohe* he has fceen in the habit of receiving, what manner of man, he was corresponding with. In one sense, however, the colony :"haß been honoured."
