The Greek Government have notified the European powers of their intention to disarm, and have urged the withdrawal of the blockade from the Greek ports
London, June 1.
A fresh difficulty has arisen between Turkey and Greece, the latter country persisting in retaining possesion of and fortifying the heights at Mount Zygos, which position dominates the town Metzovo in Albania.
We have heard et several casoa of female ingenuity in aiding the escape of prisoners. Here is one: The criminals were handcuffed, and with their escort were awaiting the train which would convey thorn to the County Gaol . S uddenly a woman rushed through the crowd of spectators with a shower of tears and cried out: 'Kiss me good-bye, Ned:' The escort goed-naturedly allowed the process of osculation to be performed, and the Sheriff smiled feelingly. The woman passed a key from her own to the prisoner's mouth, with which he undid the * bracelets' and escaped while the train was in motion. * Major Atkinson, in'the course of his i last speech at Auckland, made some reference to the price of butter. It would appear that this question is of some importance to the settlers of Taranaki. •The quantity of butter shipped from the port of New Plymouth during the tnelve months from April, 1885, to March. 1886, was 12,373 kegs, weighing 680 tons. By "adding, the butter sent out by way of Waitara, it is found the total export for the year is over 1,700,0001b5. The farmers receive on an . average 9i a lb, and the lecal buyers, who sell to the outside traders aud consumers receive about lOd. This means that last year about £71,000 was received by Taranaki on account of butter alone.— Auokland Star.
