The Taiaroa Disaster
CAPTAIN CENSURED. [per united press association. T Wkliington, May 12The Taiaroa enquiry was resumed at 12.15 p.m. to-day. Mr Travers addressed the court nn Captain Thomson's behalf The Court adjourned till 10.; am. tomorrow, when judgement will be given. This Day. Judgement in the Taiaroa enquiry was given this morning. Mr Stratford, after receiving evidence as to the state of the weather and the iacidents of the voyage, up to the time of (Striking, said b. 9 found that the vessel was navigated safely up to B*3o p.m., when the wind changed to the : southward.' The course ought then to have been altered to south f weft. H"d the master taken sounding.*, he must have known he was too close in shore. The neglect of Thompson to look at the compass showed a want of care, and ignorance of the responsibilities of his position His certificate would be cancelled, but in view of the judgement, coolness, and courage displayed by the captain after the wreck, the Governor irduld be recommended to re-issue the certificate providing he shall have served during the meantime regularly at sea as mate. The costs of the enquiry amounted :o £33 6s, of which £16 10s would be charged to the capfuin.
