Singular Rape Case
[PEB UNITED PRESB ASSOCIATION.] Blenheim, May 5. Some singular circumstances in the case for attempted rape against Collett, a jockey, were referred to by His Honor in his charge to the grand jury to-day. Since the Prisoner was committed for trial he has married the prosecntrix. His Honor said he had never heard of such a case before, but marriage was not itself a condonation of the offence, which affected the law and the community at large as well as the parties immediately concerned. The grand jury found a true bill against Oollett, who was put on his trial. The evidence clearly established the charge, accussed having admitted it, and pleaded that he had been engaged to the girl two years, and committed the offence when drunk after the races. His Honor directed the jury that although the subsequent marrying was somewhat in accused's favour, a man was not ~ justified in forcing a woman to whom he was engaged. They had to consider the consequences if he had no, married her after all, and regard must-be had to the gross outrage on public decency. Prisoner was found guilty, and re- ; ceived a sentence of three months imprisonment.
