The Fielding Star. THURSDAY, APRIL 22, 1886. Wellington - Manawatu Railway

Ik referring to the proposed extension of the railway in the city of Wellington to Te Aro, the Post says :—•• The completion of the railway into the Manawatu district will in all probability enormously increase the timber trade of this port. The saw-millers of Manawatu will, despite the railway carriage, probably find it more to their interest to ship timber from Wellington than from either Foxton or Wanganui, where small vessels only can be loaded, and the risk of their going ashore is considerable. There is in the district which the Manawatu line will tap, an almost inexhaustible supply of timber, for which a profitable market can be found in Australia." We may add to this that not only is there an inexhaustible supply of timber, but of beef, mutton, pork, cheese, butter, and grain of all kinds, to be sent from here to Wellington by rail, to find their tray to the markets of the world through that port. We do not think that the Government will be behind-hand in recognising the fact of the enormous increase of goods traffic which will have to be taken up when the new line is open. One of the greatest facilities will be in so arranging that goods for shipment can be taken on to the railway wharf and put on board ship at once, and thus save the expense of a needless unloading. We hope the Manawatu Railway Company will not fail to urge strongly on the Government the necessity for making the desired extension.
