The Premier at Napier
[pee united peess association.] Napieb, April 21. The Hon. Mr Stout addressed a crowded meeting in (he theatre Uoynl tonight. Several leading citizens were on the stage, including tlie Hon. J. Wilson •nd Mr Ormond. Mr Ste-ut was warmly cheered on making his appearance. He defended the measures brought in last *»88ion, and Raid that notwithstanding tbe ievere depression the Gorernment would meet the House with a surplus of 4'37,«J0'». Their future policy would be (• push on public works with prudence and as speedily as practicable. He warmly defended the natire administra* tien of the Government, and also their land policy. A vote of thanks wa9 proposed, coupled with confidence iv the Government, which created some uproar, cheers and, and "no, no." An amend, incut was moved, that a vote of thanks only be given, on the ground that a large number of persons in the. theatre were not voters of . Napier, but were brought in before the meeting commenced by special train trem the country districts. The original metion was carried, amidst confusion, by a good majority. A large number of hands were held up against it. The meeting closed with a rote of thanks to the chairman.
