The Fielding Star. TUESDAY, APRIL 20, 1886. Government Life Assurance Association

♦ The resolution adopted at the last meoting of the Board of Government Life Assurance Association, proposing to hand back the management of the Association from the (nominal) control of the policyholders to the Government, is one which will meet the hearty approval of a large majority of the policyholders. If the latter, through their elected representatives, had ever been able to exercise the slightest control over the actions of the Board, we would have opposed this resolution with voice and pen ; but as the overwhelming majority of Government nominees rendered them mere nullities, it is much better for the farce to be stopped altogether. A cry will no doubt be raised about policyholders being " permitted to have a voice in the management of their own affairs," and with some degree of justification, but under the circumstances we think it muoh better for the policyholders to be heard through their representatives in Parliament, than through an uninfluential minority on an irresponsible Board. That the Association has been used as a means to reward political supporters of the Government, is a fact which cannot be denied, but neither can it be refuted that this abuse of power has only been exercised since the Board, which was to give <f power to polioyholders," came into existence. Under the old regime we had not so much to complain of. mmmmmmmmmmmmm
