Wellington Markets

Wellington, April 17. Since last report there has been no arrivals of cargoes from other than colonial ports. Business has been brisk, but with little- alteration in prices of most articles of commerce. There has been an active demand of late for wine, beer, and spirits. Hennessy's brandy was very scarce till the arrival of the Morecambe Bay, and the shipments by that vessel were cleared off, almost at once. Auckland sugar is still quoted at £30 for No. 1 ; £28 for No. 2; and £24 for No. 3; American granulated from £29 to £30 ; and China, £28 to £28 10s. Salt is. still in excessiye supply. A Quantity of fine, which arrived per Morecambe Bay, has been placed in Dunedin, and some coarse has also found purchasers there. There are no transactions in currants, which are firmly held at rates already quoted. There is no alteration in tinned fish. The; demand for grass seed for autumn «owing is past, as operations are now completed, but there is every prospect of ". &' "good demand for the spring. ilouiisquotedat£B 15s to £9 10s, accorotlng. to brand. Short, oats are in good demand at 2s 3d to 2s 6d, but other classes are heavy of sale; ' Salt buttefts. quoted at 8d to 9d per lb, bntftaese prices are merely nominal, as ttey are not to be got. A heavy fall in prices in Sydney is announced. The' N.ZL and M.A. Company's Sydney report states that the fall is owing to enormous shipments from New Zealand, and that in spite of the lower xange of value the trade has become so unsettled that sales of any magnitude are for the moment out of the question. It is reported, however, in other quarters that the depression in Sydney prices is not likely to last long;' Cheese is dull of sale, at 5£ to €d. Strangely enough many articles of produce which are commonly sent to Wellington from Canterbury are at present actually quoted at higher prices' in Chnstchurch than here. There have been no transactions in cement, and iron of all sorts is without change.
