A correspondent of the Nelson Oolbnist states that the question has frequently been asked— What is the coif of cultivating an acre of hops? In reply to this he gives the following estimate of the work required to be dose: — Digging, 5s per 100 £d; pruning, 2s per hundred £l ss ; poling £l 10s; tying £1 4s; cleaning and earthing £2 ; picking 1 000 bushels at 3d per bushel £12 10s ; pole puller £1 10s ; fuel and drying £3 ; five bales and packing £1 2s 6d ; delivering and pressing 17s 6d; rent £l ; stripping and stacking £l ; new j>oles £2 ; total £31 18s. He adds that one thousand bushels of hops, equal to 12501b5, which he estimates as the product of au acre, would realise at 6d per 1b the sum of £31 ss, or 13s less than the cost of production.
