Cutting Rata and Maire Sleepers

About twelve mouths ago certain inducements were held out to the sawinillers here by the Government to cut rata and maire sleepers. In consequence of these the sawmillers made all the necessary preparations for cutting large supplies of such sleepers. For some unknown reason the inducements have been withdrawn. A petition has been prepared by the sawniillers, pointing out that they have incurred considerable expense in making preparations to meet the Government in the matter, and praying the Government to re-consider the question. The document has been placed in the hands of Mr Macarthur, M.H.E., who will forward it to the Minister for Public Works.
