[?KB UJTITHD PBBSS ASSOCIATION.] Dukedik, March 20. Sir George Grey addressed a crowded and enthusiastic meeting at the Garrison Hall last night. He strongly opposes large borrowing, and in regard to the East and West Coast Railway said that, if carried on to Nelson, it weald not be reproductive for a very considerable period of time, but if the present Christ* church railway were united to the Bran* nerton line it would be most reproductive. Christchubch, March 21. The unemployed agitation here still continues. Yesterday 50 men waited on the Mayor, and represented that there ware in the aggregate 200 children dependent on them whom they were unable to support for want of employment. The Mayor telegraphed to Government about the matter. Wbimhgtok, This Day Viscount de Jouffray, French Consel, has been interviewed with reference to the proposed shipment of Kecidivistes to New Caledonia, and the adjacent Islands of Fines. He expresses an opin ion that the cost of export to these islands' will prevent any large shipments being made, as it is estimated that the cost of conveying 1000 recidivistes is 1,000,000 francs. He states that these islands are welUwatohed by French war vessels, se as to prevent escapes, but when any do 1 take place, they have been re-captured and sent back again. With this object a French detective is resident in Australia. Viscount de Jouffray considers that a gotd deal of the political agitation in Australia against the reeidiviste question had a political motive. Auckland. This Day. Arrived — Arawatu from Fiji.
