Fire at Ashurst
Yesterday afternoon, about 4 p.m., a fire broke out in Mr Nelson's stables which was communicated to Mr C. £ Warne's boarding house. Both buildings were bmned to the ground. Mr Warne saved very little- of his furniture. The building of Mr Nelson's store was saved with great difficulty as it caught fire in several places, but , as there was abundance of water and . plenty of willing hands to assist, jarn^ further disaster was averted. "The " principal loss sustained by Mr Nelson is from breakage and other damage as the goods and crockeryware were placed on the grass plot opposite the store. In this exposed situation and by careless handling, much breakage or other injury was suffered by them. The building of the English Church also was in great danger, as the roof was set on fire by sparks from the burning houses, and was only saved by great exertions on the part of the people. The damage done to the roof is considerable. The telephone. wires being down prevented any message being sent away. Insurance on Warne's house £200, furniture £ 150. Nelson's stables £150. The two latter amounts in the Royal.
