The scheme alluded to by Lord Gran* ville in the house of Lords yesterday has for its objects the utilising of the services of British naval and military officers in the defences of the colonies, but not gene, ral Imperial forces as previously telegraphed. Replying to a question in the House of Commons, Mr Campbell Bannerman, Secretary for War, stated that any fear that the Arabs would succeed in occupying Dongola were entirely groudless. It has been arranged that the present garrison of Indian forces in the occupation of Suakim should be withdrawn on May next, and replaced by Egyption troops. The Socialist leaders, who were re* manded from Wednesday last, were further examined before the Magistrate yesterday. They called several witnesses for their defence, including, Sir Edward Henderson, Commissioner ef Police at the time of the outbreak. Arrived — P. and O. Company's R.M.S. Massalia, from Melbourne, January 14. It is expected that the precedent established in the case of the Victorian Government* claims against the Oriental Bank will apply to the Government of South Australia with regard to the Com* mercial Bank. February 27. The operatives in the factories of Messrs Netllefold and Co., screw manufacturers, Birmingham, have struck, and rioting has taken place in consequence. The Emperor of Germany is at present confined to bis room, suffering from the effects of a fall. The Economist, referring to the failure of the Commercial Bank, expresses the belief that confidence in the other banks has not been shaken. The price of whent is hardening, contingent upon the quality of American shipment*. There is a slight increase in the purchase ex warehouse. One cargo on passage has been offered at 35a to 365.
