The Makino

+ The excellent reputation which the Makino Cheese Factory is earning under the skilful management of the proprietor, Mr Davis, must exercise a considerable influence in assisting the progress of settlement in this valley. One of our staff paid a hasty visit to the Factory yesterday, and was much pleased with the condition in which he found it One noticeable feature is the perfect cleanliness which obtains, and as a natural consequence, the atmosphere in the building is sweet and pure. The strongest evidence of the good quality ©f the cheese turned out, is that in every ease where an order has been completed, it has been followed by another for still larger quantities. Most of our readers will remember that Mr Bowron, Inspector of Cheese Faetoxies, said the Makino ought to be one of the finest sites in the colony for a Cheese and Butter Factory. Mr Davis has proved the correctness of that opinion by making cheese which is equal, if not superior, to any produced in tho colony. The land is admirably adopted for dairy farming, inasmuch as the grass is green all the year round. Even in the hottest days of the summer now passing away, it has been fresh and in ample supply. The only perooptibie change was in the springs aud creeks which went somewhat low, but only for a very brief period. Clearing is going ou rapidly, and as every acre in grass moans the growth of food for a couple of cows, it is easy to calculate what a prosperous people will soon "bo gathered together in tho valley." The one other thing needed — a ready market for the milk — is now at the very doors of the farmers, who have therefore no excuse for neglecting to grasp their opportunities of doing well.
