A Gruesome Story
A despatch from Chicago says : — There is a belief expressed in Chicago that Azari, one of the three Italians hanged there a few days ago, was not fatally suffocated on the gallows. The president of the society to which the three murderers had consigned their bodies says : — " After we reached the cemetery and were lowering tho coffins into the graves, I was told by the superintendent that he was certain the bodies would not be allowed to remain in the ground overnight. Then I decided to put them in the vault, where they would be safe. After this I had the coffins opened to show that we were not delivering three coffins filled with bricks or stones. The bodies Sylvestri and Gilardi were warm but their necks were broken. Azari, however, was strangled, and when we examined his body we found that his hand had been moved up to his head and he had turned cm his .side As the fresh air struck him his eyes opened in a startling- li'"o-like man nor, and he seemed to l.c struggling for breath. Then he sank hack limp, and we fastened down the coffin. Ido not know whether the movements wore caused by involuntary musculai contraction or by lingering sparks of life."
