COMMERCIAL.
The N.Z. Times states that in the Wellington market, New Zealand cheese went up in price, add has still a rising tondency. There is little on hand, and the makers are firm in demanding increased rates. No doubt the scarcity of grass, caused by drought, has affected the supply of milk. The Brisbane correspondent of the same journal says : — The crops which weie put in during the first rains are fast maturing, and the farmers are producing sufficient butter to more than meet the existing local demand. Potatoes hare been ruling as high as £10 per ton, but this was due to the strikes in Melbourne, which delayed [the forwardment of Tasminian and Victorian sup plies. Now that the strike has termina c-; the ruling price is £7 per ton for a good sample. Good local cheese has been sold as low as 9d per lb ; imported is worth 9d to Ib, according to quality and size. Other lines remain as before, but practically there is no demand for the imported article. There is a fair demand for timber, but consignors should first ■ ascertain what is suitable for this market i before shipping.
