Melancholy Deaths
The sudden deaths of the two unfortunate men Boffe and Delmab, who were suffocated by bad air in a well at Stoney Creek on Wednesday last, must excite the sympathy of all residents in this district. They were in the enjoyment of perfect health, with no thought of danger before them, yet in a few brief moments their span of life was cut short, without a note of warning being sounded. The reflection that this misfortune was avertible adds to our regret. The exercise of a little forethought on the part of the first man down the well would have made him try, by the simple means of lowering a lighted candle, whether the air at or near the bottom was foul or otherwise. Instead of this, he went down without any precaution — and died. His mate, with a courage we must regret, rushed heedlessly into the same danger to help his friend, and met the same fate. Thus two wives were made widows because a simple precaution was neglected.
