The Banks

Assets: Coined gold, silver, &c, £2,029,976 6s 4d ; ' bullion in bars, £149,137 10s sd ; notes of other Banks, £33,774 18s Id; balances due from other Banks, £36,960 14s 4d ; landed property, £477,434 16s Id; bills discounted, £4,593,406 12s; debts due to the Banks, exclusive of debts abandoned , as bad, £11,421,244 5s 2d; other | securities, £428,389 12s 6d; total assets, £19,170,324 14s lid; being an ' excess over liabilities of £7,733,138 13s lOd. From the above it will be seen that the enormous sum of sixteen millions and a half is owing by the people of New Zealand to the Banks, j The total amount of capital paid up is ' only £5,750,000, on which the amount . of last dividend declared was £425,250, l and the amount of reserve funds at the time of declaring such dividend, £3,270,745 17s 2d. These figures ought to satisfy the most captious of the excellent monetary position of the Colony
