The Driver Job
This is how the Lyttelton Times discusses Mr Driver's appointment: — "We have the admission of the manager ol the Department that in one of the great districts of the colony the bnsiness of the Department has gone down with disastrous rapidity. That it is necessary to try and stem this evil ebb of th« tide nobody dreams of denying. All the wrath in virtuens bosoms is reserved for the appointment ©f the man who hag been selected to do the work of recovery. We won't allow high commissions, and we won't allow high salaries. That is what it comes to. What in the name oi patience are we to alllow P It seems tc us that his outcry is a unresonable. A desperate evil has been met by a reined j out of the common. The best and fairesl thing to do is t« wait till we *«c how the remedy works. If Mr Driver, who is a capable, energetic man ot business, and one ef the best convassers in New Zealand, restores the position of affairs at Dunedm, his salary will be a batjuti'll" in comparison t« that advantage If he does not succeed, it n ill bo time to discuss the appointment by the light of its results."
