Libel Cases
(PRB UXITKD PBKBB ASSOCIATION.) Wkllihgtos, January 20. In the libel case Evening News, of Napier, v. Waipawa Independent Newspaper Printing Company, proprietors of the Waipawa Mail, Mr W. C. Smith, M.H.R., Dr Von Mirbach, and several shareholders in the Evening News Company were examined. No witnesses were called for the defence, and after 20 minutes' deliberation the iury returned with a verdict for the plaintiffs for £150 and costs. At the Supreme Court this morning the case of Sawkins v. Waipawa Mail, an action for libel, alleged to be contaiued in an article on which yesterday's prosecution was' based was called' on. Counsel for the defence intimated that the case had been settled, plaintiff accepting £100 damages without costs. In the Supreme Court to-day, the case of Sinclair v Hornby, a libel ' action, in which plaintiff sought to reoover £1000 damages from defendant, who is proprietor of the Marlborough Times, was commenced.
