Cable Charges

(PBB UNITED PBBBB AMQCUTIOX.) Wellington, January 18. Dr .Lemon this afternoon received a cablegram from the Eastern Extension Cable Company, stating that the company refused to agree to the terms decided upon by the New Zealand Parliament, and that the company would hold but against any reduction in the cable charges. 1 Later. With reference to the' refusal of th» Eastern Extension Cable Company to accept the Government proposals re the cable subsidy, Sir Julius Yogel wires from "Waiwera as* follows : — " The Cable Company , have sent a cablegram to the effect that they will raise the tariff* unless, we fitfve the subsidy for 10 years* and then they will insist on a minimum of ten words and a Press guarantee, or they will take the subsidy for five years without the proposed reduction of the present charges. I have refused to entertain the propositions, and have cabled to the 'Agent-General' to ascertain the cost of making and. laying a new cable from the principal makers. The cost to the colony, would, I believe, be less. ■ iv<. ''•-.".■ ;•- ; s •
