The Feilding Star. SATURDAY, JAN. 16, 1886. Official Courtesy
We were indebted to our Palmerston contemporary the Standard for the information that Feilding was to be deprived of the services «f the Clerk to the Court for an indefinite period, while that officer relieved Mr Woow, of Wanganui. As a substitute, we learn in the same casual way, Mr HaotiTAut, Clerk of the Court, Palmerston, is to visit Feilding one day in each week, until Mr Thompson is able to resume his duties. We are of opinion that the Feilding people have good cause of complaint for the scant courtesy there has been shown them in this matter. No public notification of any kind has been made, either from the Bench or through the advertising columns of the press, in order that they might be made aware of the fact that the resident officer was to be removed to Wanganui, and that his services would, consequently, not be available as heretofore for six days in the week. We are not even informed on what days the Palmerston official will be able to come to Feilding, or at what hours he will be in attendance at the office of the E.M. Court to perform the various functions of his office. This free and easy way of treating us is rather against the grain of an independent people, and we protest against it as a gross infringement of our rights. The lack of common courtesy exhibits a gross want of tact in the officer who is responsible for the act. One farmer rode in yesterday to take out a summons ; several business men in the Borough also called at the R.M. Cour£ to do business, and it was only then that they learned they had their journey for nothing. This is not as it. should be. The time of farmers and business men is too valuable to be wasted because the Department of Justice is too parsimonious, or short handed to send a proper relieving officer to Wanganui. That the exegenciea of the service may have . left no other course open, maybe possible, but we take the liberty to doubt it. What we complain of is that the removal was not publicly notified, nor has any means been applied to meet the convenience of the public. I
