The Feilding Star. THURSDAY, JAN. 14, 1886, The Stratford Fires
. . +~- . Although no mention was made of the matter in our last issue, yet we ! were aware that His Worship the Mayor, Mr Lethbridob, had already opened and headed a subscription list in aid of the sufferers by the fires' at Stratford. Recent advices from New Plymouth having indicated that no further funds are necessary, for the present at least, the list will be closed and such amounts as have been paid will be returned to the donors!" It appears that the Hawera people are not of opinion that " no further funds are necessary," and have, repudiated the action of the. Mayor of New Plymouth. "We learn from the Wanganui Chronicle that a telegram was sent to him as follows : — " Committee amazed at the resolution passed by your committee and published in to-night's Star, and consider it childish to say that £500 you have collected i& sufficient. May we ask for an explanation of the unwarrantable and insulting interference with our canvass ? "Eiaiott Barton, " Sec. Belief Fund Committee." There is a good deal of fire in this telegram, and the language is not quite so to unisnpassioned as it might have been. Be that as it may, the fact is the qualifying phrase " should need arise, will gladly call upon you for further aid" used by the New Plymouth Mayor in his telegram, appears to have been overlooked. Hence these tears. Should the further need arise as foreshadowed, we are requested to state that the list will be re-opened at Feilding, and persons desirous of assisting either in money or in kind can do so through the Feilding Star, where subscriptions and goods will be thankfully received and promptly foi warded to the proper quarter.
