A telegram received from Masterton i his evening states that the statement re the proposed exhumatien of the bo3y" of Mr Rayriel is quite correct. It is said that the sereral hand is in Mastertoa in charge «f Detective O'Connor, who is up from Christchurch. All the facts are being kept secret by hie police officers, as the"y want to capture the local accomplices of the Howards. f ! This Day. This morning the pelice authorities made an application to the Colonial Secretary for permission to exhume the body of Mrs Baynel, who died at M as-r. terton in NoTember, as it is believed the hand found at Sumner Beach was pat from her body. The Wellington police hare an idea that the severed harid is from the body of a man burried in Wellington Cemetery about the 13th of December,^ and they have applied f or i vrarran, to allow them to exhume Ijh,e body." 1* is conjectured that Howard's injury to. his arm was the result of blood poisoning by cutting the arm from the corpse. : . : ' Chbistchubch. It has transpired that the body ef a female lunatic, whe died ithe Sunnyside Asylum early in October, and buried in the Addington cemetery, was exhumed before Daybreak on Moaday last, to ascertain whether the severed hand had been obtained- from it. - The corpse, however, was aot mutilated.
