Scene at a Court
A little passage- at-arms took place in the Magistrate's Ceurt this morning between Mr Jellicoe and Mr Izard during the hearing of a case brought by a foreman lately employed in the service of the Wellington Meat Preserving Company, who sought to recover an amount for alleged wrongful dismissal. Mr Izard was proceeding to explain the reasons which led to the plaintiff's dismissal ; and used the words " tVia was the last straw which caused his dismissal." This brought Mr Jellicoe to his feet, who objected to the terms used by " his friend." Mr Izard immediately objected to those interruptions which were invariably made by Mr JVliicoe, whq perhaps ought te be excused, lie added, on account of liis utter ignorance ot the rules of the profession. This remark added fuel to the wrath of Mr Jellicre, who retorted that he was as much acquainted with the rules of tho profession as was Mr Izird. Mr Wardel!, R.M., here interfered, and poured oil on. tlie troubled legal waters in his usual urbane manner. Peace being apparent^' restored, Mr Izard proceeded to remark— '* I was about to say, your Worship, when I was interrupted in a most disgraceful manner by this man, veho does not possess the common instincts of a gentleman," when up rose Mr Jellicoe, who " protested against the unwarrantable language" used by counsel for the other side. He was ad much a uentfernari' as Mr Izard. Mr Wardell again interponed, and the case proceeded without further unpleasantness. — Post.
