Thomson proposed, and Cr Nicholas seconded, "That tenders be called for stationery for twelve months. - — Carried. ' Aletter (which had been overlooked) •vas here read from A. F. Halcombe re certain fences which had been destroyed by fire, and asking, the Council to replace 'them. • . The Mayor said that the Council should go into committee on this let- j iter, and the appointment of a night- 1 Watchman. Cr Nicholas put a question re a contract which had expired. I The Town Clerk explained. Hej said it was the duty of the Engineer to bring ±he matter before the Public Works Committee. •Gr. Nicholas still thought it the duty of ithe Town Clerk to inform cooimittteea when time contracts expired. ... Cr Thompson thought any responsibility ought to rest Tyith Cr Nicholas, who ; is chairman of the Puphc Works Oommittee. Cr Thompson proposed, and Cr Hichardson seconded, That the Mayor be authorised to get legal advice on Mr Halcombe?s daiim Cr Thompson said there were many similar casesj and it was necessary they shoidd feel their way. . Cr. Nicholas could not see what the Council had to do with it. ;. , Cr Richardson said, the Council had allowed the, grass to grow to the detriment of the people. Cr Peter Thomson opposed the motion, and thought Mr Halcombe was inconsistent in making a claim on the Borough. . ;He would refer the letter back to' Mr Halcombe. Thomson thought ' each inah should look after his own property. Cr Nicholas thought the insurance Companies ought to pay half. The* ' Mayor said while they were finding out all about that the place might be'-burhed down. ' Cr Nioholas' proposed, and Cr Peter Thomson seconded, That Mr Sherwill be informed that oh receipt of a guarantee to pay half the cost of watchman the Council will employ a nightwatchman, and that the Engineer be authorised tb engage a suitable man forthwith. — Carried. Cr Nicholas referred to the license fees of certain vehicles. The^ Town Clerk said the- matter had been put in the hands of the police.. Cr Nicholas said the by-law should be put in force. He made special reference to traps and carriages which drove about at night without lamps. Cr Worsfold asked if the Temperance Hall was licensed ? ' ! Cr Thompson said .he was the proprietor of the hall in' question, ahd he Jet it on the occasion free; It would not occur, again.
