[PSB UNITED PBESS ASSOCIATION.] Wellington, January 4. i The mysterious hand affair, which ' has caused some little sensation at Christchurch, has been solved by the arrest at Petone, a suburb of Wellington, of Howard, who was supposed to have been drowned near Sumner. It , appears that the large reward offered had put tho police here on the gui mve. and this afternoon Constable Hartnett, who is stationed at tho Hutt, suspecting a man named Watson, who had been working at Petone, followed up the inquiries. Hartnett became assured that he had bagged his bird, and about four o'clock he arrested John Watson as being the man Howard from Christchurch. The s indentity was not denied. Watson, i or rather Howard, had been working , for one day at the Woollen Factory at Petone, and had to knock off in consequence of an injured arm. He ' had been living in private lodgings. ' On being asked to show his hands he ' willingly complied, and Hartnett arrested him. Howard was wearing a wig and had his moustache dyed. This Day. At the R.M. Court Howard, the ■ principal in the mysterious hand affair ** at Christchurch was charged with 1 intent to defraud the Government * Life Association and was remanded to Christchurch.
