More Destructive Fires
GREAT LOSS OF PROPERTY. (per united press association.) Napier, January 4. A terrible conflagration broke out lat Waipawa, at three o'clock this morning. The fire commenced in a small cottage near the river, and I between the railway Line and Main . street. The flames spread rapidly to ! a block of small shops, and from these to the Empire Hotel out buildings. i These, together with the hotel, were soon destroyed. The fire is still proceeding along that side of tlie street, and the Bank of New Zealand was next to go . Telegraphic communication with Waipawa is cut off but up to the present, 10 shops; the hotel, and the bank have been destroyed. A special train was sent from Napier with the steam fire engine and brigade. It is reported that the post and telegraph offices have been burnt down, and that the flames have spread to the other side of the street. The following are the., Insurances on the Empire Hotel building— South British, L 750 ; New Zealand L 50 0; National, L 25 0; Stock and furniture-— Union, L 400; Norwich, L 200; London and Lancashire, L 35 0; National, L 250.
