Smallpox m Montreal
The Press tf->*u< > u.i am! despatches of a late date --liow ihat the plague of .smallpox rages in Montreal with vi abated virulence. The hospitals are ail full, and patients are dying at the rale of 35 to 45 per week. Since tlie outbreak. ■JiMR' have died. Businesses paralysed. Those who can arc flt*ein<* aw.-iy, to remain until tho pln<iu<* i-. stayed. Every train or steamer that leaves Canada for any poiui in tiif United States is Mibyjpcii'd to rigid inspec. ion. Every pas.'---i-enger must present evidence of either baring had the disease, being recently vaccinated, or submit to the operation at once. This policy, rigidly enforced, gives* rife to many laughable incidents especially where a bevy of fashionable ladres are concerned. Notwithstanding the dreadful experiences in the strickeu oity there are districts in it where to enforce general vaccination would involve riot and bloodshed. The hospUas seems to be in charge of the Grey Nuns, and the Montreal Witnesg, of a recent date, tolls a tale of horrible suffering, of filth and incompfl tence.
