German Colonies
German colonisation is proceeding very slowly, says the Home News. Prince Bismark has no doubt got the better of Spain with regard to the Caroline Islands, although some time mu.t elapse before the difficulty is definitely arranged. All that is clear is that Spain admits now that her sovereignty was latent, and ihat she never took lormal posse-ssioi* of the islands she claims. Between this, however, and absolv e withdrawal in favour of Germany is a long step, and it is hardly likely that German supremacy will be established just yet. Kaiser Wilhelm. Land, the aevr name of North Guinea, may be considered undoubted German territory ; but here, too, colonisation must proceed tardily. The company that is working it has plainly intimated that the country is not yet ripe for emigration Ho ita tions have been erected on the coast ; nor has any communication been established between it and the neighbouring continent of Australia. Everything is being done to remedy these drawbacks, but it is impossible yet to giv.' grants of land or encourage settlement. Tt is probable, therefore, New Guinea will long continue to be stigmatised as a land of '• snakes, swamps, and savages."
