The Feilding Star. THURSDAY, DEC. 24, 1885. Christmas, 1885

« This happy season is once more upon us, and the cares and troubles of the past year are forgotten, or laid aside to give place to a fooling of thankuflness and gratitude for that we have been spared lo enjoy it. Since this time last year the changes in Feilding have not been marked by any special features. We have suffered one great misfortune in the destruction by fire of Messrs Bartholomew's saw mill, whioh was a means of employment for a great many men and of subsistence to a number of families. But even that has been partly met, for all of the men are otherwise employed, and the mill will probably be in full work again before many weeks have gone. On the other hand we havo had many blessings to more than compensate for this and other minor mischances. The weather has been so exceptionally fine that everyone has had plenty of work, consequently we have had no distress which could not — or has not been alleviated. The voice of the " unemployed" has not been heard pleading for work that they might earn food for their families. Some old faces are missing from among us, hut that is always to be expected, and should only be a warning for all to be prepared for that great day, when we shall be called to meet Him whose birth we will celebrate to-morrow. There is nothing to regret in the inevitable. For ourselves, we would remark, as we have on previous occasions, that if during the past year wo havo sometimes " ruffied the feathers" of any of our readers, it has bsen for the good ot the wholecommunity. We have no private feelings on any public business. If we have unwittingly done any man wrong we crave his pardon, and hope his feeling of injury haying been done to him whether real or imaginary, will be softened by this admission. To our subscribers and advertisers we offer our best thanks for the liberal support they have accorded to us, and wish them one and all A Mbbbt Christmas.
