The rail to . iHVEBOABOHIi is through a plain, the soil of which seems good, though, there is rather too much tea-tree scrub. Invereargill is the "surprise" town of New Zealand. A few years ago it was a town of wood, but now all is reversed — thanks to the very numerous' fires 1 that have made room for-stone and brick buildings to be erected, and -which cannot be surpassed in any town; The streets are a chain and a half wide, and are all at right angles.' The amount of architectural adornment lavished on the outside of most of the banks, public offices, aad hotels is most pleasing to behold, and is. a strong evidence that the inhabitants of Invereargill are a people of great taste and refinement. If the present high standard of buildings is maintained, the Southern capital will be one of the most beautiful of our. cities, and' will well repay one for a visit. The grain trade and refrigerating works are in full swing, and at present everything seems in a prosperous state. 'Tib only the drunkard and loafer that cry out about hard times.
