A New Measuring Instrument
Experiments have been conducted on the Thames Embankment, close to Black- ' friars Bridge, with the patent telemeter of Professor Dr Luigi Cerebutani ; of the University- at .Verona. The surveying instrument of the Italian professor consists of a telemeter, which, according to the description given, dispenses with the" re. ources and trii<ohbitfetrioal c.ilculations hitherto required. It is stated that in using this apparatus it ismereh necessary to obserre a certain point in order, to a>CL>rtam its distance from the station of the obserrer, by reading off the numbers <>n the apparatus, and' by the aid of it there can easily be determined the distance between the two banks of a river, between mountain tcps or steeples, or the remoteness of any moving point or vessel Further the telemeter is employed in topoETAphy a.nd curvography to ascertain measurements in inaccessible and remote, ground. It is mentioned that the ap-paratus-is so arranged that during the operation of measuring a sketch of the -ground already measured can be pricked ©ffr by wbicn means a complete plan of the whole country under measurement can be drawn. Tfcis ingenious instrument has been specially hrought forward for war and civil engineering purposes.
