The Borough Council
As yet no candidate has offered himself for the seat in the Borough Council made vacant by the retirement of Mr Goodbehebe. Nor have we heard any rumored names of gentlemen likely to either come forward voluntarily, or be solicited by a requisition from their fellow townsmen. This apathy on the part of those most interested may be accepted as a convincing* proof that, taking the body as a whole, the Council does its work to the satisfaction of every one. There are times and seasons when councillors enjoy the reputation of being the best abused representatives of the people in the colony. But notwithstanding this drawback, it is notorious that they carry out the functions entrusted to them with fidelity and zeal, with an honest regard for the welfare of the ratepayers. Although the latter are slow to admit this, yet they tacitly do so by their ready submission to such rules and regulations as are laid down for them to follow or obey, from time to time. We think therefore that the honor is worth strivingf or, and would like to see every burgess in his turn anxious and willing to have a seat in the Borough Council.
