The Home Elections

♦— - — [ekutehs TKLF.GEAMB. I London, November 25. The elections are -proceeding quietly. The Hon. Colonel Stanley, Seeretary of State forthe Colonies, has been returned unopposed. Mr J. E. Gorst has been re-elected for Chatham. Thirty-five Tories have been elected and thirty-two Liberals. Among the latter G. Otto Trevelyan and Mr Campbell Bannerman were returned unopposed; whilst Sir AV D. Hayter and Mr J. Passmore Edwards have been defeated for Bath and Salisbury respectively. The Right Hon. A. W. Peel, Speaker, has been elected. In Ireland two Parnellite candidates have been returned. The nomination of Miss Helen Taylor has been refused. Mr W. H. Smith, Secretary of. War, lias been returned hy a majority of over 3000. . The Tory rote' has been relatively strong in many of the other contests, and appears to be increasing. The Radicals have carried the day at Birmingham. The net" returns, at present give the Tories a majority of 11. l ' Up to the present time 86 Liberals and 88 Conservatives have been elected. For the City of London electorate (bhe member), the Right Hon. J. G. Hubbard and Alderman' Fowler each polled the same number of votes. The Conservative candidates have been generally successful.-. the London suburban electorates. In the provinces, Liberals halve been elected for Yiortf Salisbury, Boston and Edinbord*, while Conservatives have been successful at Bolton, Winchester, Nuneaton and Hull. Leeds, but of five seats, returned three Conservatives, whiles for Sheffield, the foUowing ' five members have - ' been elected: — Messrs Coleridge^ Mundilla, Howard Vincent, Ashinead Bartlett, and Stuartworthyi Mr Gladstone has been re-elected for Midlothian, and Sir Lyon Palyfair for Edinhoro' aiid St. Andrews' Universities.
