A Deep Gold Mine
-•- Some interesting information has •been, received respecting the deep gold mine at Sandhurst. The mine in question, Lansell's ■ .No. 180, is the deepest payable .mine in Victoria, the depth of tho shaft being over 2000 feet, and gold-bearing quartz has been sden as far down as the bottom of the shaft. It is a private mine, owned by Mr George Lansell, and yielded well down to a depth of some 400 feet. He continued to sink against the .advice of theorists,, who said that no payable quartz would ever be found below the water level; and ■. after ten years of prospecting, auriferous stone was struck at 1650 feet. Sinking was continued, drives being put in at regular intervals:; and the yield of the stone crushed has been,, for several months, published fortnightly, but as they only averaged a few pennyweights to the ton, they were not sufficiently! encouraging ;to attract much capital in the direction of deep mining enterprise. Humors, however, began to get current that the best stone in Mr Lansell's - mine was not being sent to the stampers ; and from the fact that tho last reported crushing of 425 tons returned over 748 ozs., it may be inferred that these rumors have not been altogether without foundation. It has also been stated not only that there is a large body of payable stone waiting to be removed from the lower levels; but also that if the best ground in the mine were crushed, a return of 1000 ozs. of gold could be obtained in any fortnight. Such a report as this is sufficient 'to determine the future of mining at Sandhurst for many years to come. Iron.
