An Important Invention
Mr'-VB. Hanuay, F.R.S., tha young B<>bteh chemist who Succeeded in making diamonds, has just announced an invention which will bring gladness to the hearts of the great Shipping Companies. He has discovered a method of burning coal in steam, boilers in such a way as not to interfere with steam-raising or necessitate material alteration of the boilers,-- but so as to yield-much- more than the value of the coal in ammonia. In a letter to Mr B-.-W. Emerson M'lvor, F.1.C., Mi __*n_iay says : •' — " Imagine saving steamships their coal bill! The P. _oid r OJ.hu^n. £500,000 worth of* coal per . ahpuTn^ and we can produce £^^0 worth of ammonia during tbie combustion, of this fuel in raising gteajm/' The importance of ammonia asa" constituent of manures may be judged -from the fact that it is worth - 4_oui'£loO per ton; aud that the supJp ply of it is at present much below' the demand. Hannay's invention will serve alike the interests of tiie steammmdti oiwner and the' farmer.
