New that the Exhibition buildings are being demolised, it has been discovered that the buildings had a narrow escape from destruction by fire. A gas-heating stove had boon used in the refreshment rooms aad no protection had been placed between it and the wooden walls. Oa removing the stove it was found that s considerable portion of the dsdo-ing was charred almost through, and that part of the scrim above it had been burnt aad the dry lining boards scorched. The refreshment room is beneath the Fine Art Gallery, aad had the fire broken out ao doabt tho fine oollootien ef pictures irottld have been destroyed. At a meeting ef the Exhibition Executive Committee to-day a number ef protests were received, most of which were lirected against the special gold medal -.wards.
