The Pohangina Roefs
(PKB UNITED PBKSS ASSOCIATION).
Wellington, Norember4.
Mr H. C. Field, surveyor, of Wanga■ui, has addressed a letter to Dr Hector re Pohangina reefs, in which he states that after spending a, week ia examining the locality so far as vegetation allowed he found no indication of quartz reof. He kai strong reasons to believe some of the assertions made, repeating the *rigiual prospectors' claims, are untrue, and only circulated to deceive. Dr Hector states that he knows the district, and that the stone is much the same as found at Teruwhiti, Wellington, and further that there is no reason t» be sanguine.
To-day's Chronicle says: — We may say that to our mind it bat been made abundantly clear that the Pohangina atone contains both gold and silver. It has yet, however, to be determined whether the precious metals are to be found in payable quantities, and for that reason it is satisfactory to know that the claim-holder* in the district have joined together to get out a ton »f stone and send it to the Thames fur testing. It would be feolis't for anybody, to incur large expeaditure on tsje faith ef the tests that have been made up to the prevent time ; but it would be equally silly to condemn and abandon the field before a test on a -larger and more satisfactory scale has been applied.
