The s.s. Wairarapa on Fire GREAT DE9TBUCTION OP CARGO. I- DAMAGE TO THE VESSEL ESTI- | HATED AT £5000. [PBB V3ITVD FBBSB ASSOCIATION.] 1 Gisbobxr, November 1. A great commotion was caused when the Wairarapa steamed into the bay about 6 o'clock this morniag, and dense volumes of smoke were seen issuing from the vessel amidships. The steamer came unusually close to the shore, and sounded signals of distress with the whistle. The steam tender Noko went off immediately, and assisted in getting out the passengers, and all were soon landed on the beach in safety, many, however, with ouly very scanty clothing, and some with ; only bedclothes wrapped around them. There were about 100 passengers for here, Auckland, and Sydney. The Wairarapa left Napier at 9.30 last ; night. The night was beautifully calm and fine. About 4 o'clock this morning, just at daylight, when a few ' miles south of Nick's Head, the alarm !of fire was raisod. The fire had a pretty good hold when discovered, and despite the utmost endeavors to subdue it, it travelled aft, and spread the whole width of the ship. A number of fire extinguishers aud hand granades were taken off from shore to assist in fighting with the fire, which kept up with unabated energy until a quarter to nine, when the chief officer reported that it had been got under, and there was no fear of the losa of the ship On inspection after the fire was got under, it was found that the whole centre of the ship, for about one quarter of her length, was completely gutted, all the woodwork andfittings being destroyed. There was not much excitement »r fear shown by the passengers, the shore being so near, and it being daylight. It is computed that it will cost at least £5000 to refit the vessel. It is not known what her movements will be, but Captain Chalfield is awaiting orders from Dunedin. It has been found that one of the stewardesses was rather seriously burned on the hand and back, otherwise the injuries are not serious. The main deck on the level of the saloon is only burnt through in one place, a large hole in the passage across the vessel near the engine room. Not much injury was done to the cargo by the fire, but considerable by the water. Many of the passengers' losses in clothing and effects were considerable, ana the commercial travellers hare lost their samples. The crew have been all the afternoon clearing away the dsbria and throwing it over the aide. All the passengers speak in the highast possible terms of the coolness and energy of the captain, officers, and men, and say there was the utmost order and discipline.
