Terrible Storm in America

A terrific storm, approaching a cyclone in its devastating power, has caused terrible destruction over a wide area of the United States. It appears that on August 24th intense heat was experienced, the hot wave extending over all the Eastern and Southern States Th|s was followed by a rapid fall of the mercury, and the following day the storm burst in full fury. Damage, more or less severe, is reported from stations all along the Atlantic coast, but the telegrams from South. Carolina, Georgia, and Florida, show that the greatest force of the storm was spent in that direction. Over a dozen ships are known to have been blown ashore 4yand completely wrecked, many lives being lost. On shore Large wooden hotels, and houses in exposed situations were rased to the ground. In Charleston itself one-fourth of the houses have been unroofed, and a Large number have collapsed altogether. The loss in this city alone is estimated at - one million dollars. It is feared that, when full reports are received, an alarming loss of life will be rerealed. Even the incomplete accounts at present to hand show that large numbers have perished. Reports from Connecticut show that in that State also serious loss will be entailed by the storm. The damage to the tobacco crop alone is estimated at one million and a half dollars. It is a curious fact that while the heat in the States was unbearable a hard frost prevailed in Manitoba about the same time. . , . i
