Destructive Fire at Wanganui

TWO RACEHORSES AND A BULL BURNT. .„,

To-day's Chronicle says: — A destructive fire broke out at half-past 1 o'clock this morning in Ifc* J; W. Jackson's extensive range of stables. The Fire Brigade were quickly on the spot, but the flames had obtained such a strong hold that nothing could avert the entire destruction of the buildings. We regret to have to record that with the structure there perished" in the flames two young racehorses, Touch, stone and Rustic. How the ire originated nobody has any idea of. A young man named Farrell, who was in charge of the stables, locked them up last evening, when there was no initiation of fire. .At the time when the fire broke out "he and two other stablemen were asleep in a detached cottage, to which the fire did not spread. The first person on the ground was Mr William Bruce, who roused the stablemen, and efforts were made to get the horses out, But without avail in the case of the two before-mentioned. One ' horse " ' We believe, escaped. The horses were not covered by insurance, but we understand that Mr Jackson holds a policy for £200 on the building in the South British. We learn that a prize bull, the property of Mr Donald Frazer, of Rangitikei, and valued at £350, also perished with, the racehorses. "" .' . .
