Discovery of Gold in Northern Queensland

The Sydney Morning Herald's Brisbane correspondent telegraphed at the beginning of the month as follows : — " It is reported that an important discovery of gold has been made at Mourilyan Harbor, near Johnstone River. It appears that when Dunwoodie, the diver, was at work blasting the rock at '.he entrance to the harbor, he took down to Townsville a piece of the rock so blasted, and a friend seeing it asked him for it saying that he thought it contained gold. Dunwoodie gave it to him, and he had it assayed, and found it contained over 7oz. of gold to the ton. The two men are now camped at Goodman Rock trying to trace the reef across to the north side, and a lot more men are up the creek at the Sugar Company's property, getting some very nice specimens weighing several penny weights, some of the gold being mixed with quartz. They are all confident that a reef exists somewhere, and crosses the mouth of the harbor.
