Feilding Star. SATURDAY, OCTOBER 17, 1885. Justices of the Peace

•" We never know the value of a thing until we have lost it. The good people of Feilding had got into the very excellent custom of referring certain small matters of neighborly dispute to either of the two Justices whose places of business were so convenient for them. Many a case that would otherwise have been " cakes and ale " for the lawyers was brought to an amicable conclusion by judicious advice, both discreetly and courteously given. A business man who wanted the services of a J.P. knew where he could fine one in a few minutes, and his valuable time was thus conserved. Everything connected with the duties of these gentlemen was done so quietly and with so little ostentation that we were hardly aware that their services were employed to the extent we discover them to have been now we have lost them. However willing the one gentleman now holding the Commission of the Peace here may be to perform the duties of the office, we are certain that even if he devoted the whole of his time to the task much would of necessity be left undone. A great public inconvenience is certain to follow this state of affairs, and we hope that the Minister of Justice will either refuse to accept the resignations sent in, or appoint successors. Great inconvenience has already been felt, is being felt, and will continue to be felt while the present state of affairs prevail.
