The Lawrence Company
On Thursday night the Lizzie Lawrence, and the New Zealand Comedy Company played in the Town Hall to a good audience. The first piece was that interesting comedy " Delicate Ground," which was put on the stage instead of thepiece "Withered Leaves,' 1 which was advertised; owing to the entire absence of any available scenery in the Hall. The piece was an entire success. At its conclusion, several songs and dances were; given, which were loudly applauded. The after-piece, "Sarah's Young Man," brought down the house. It was announced that the company would appear again on Saturday night, when the programme as announced in today's issue will be presented/The play of " East Lyne" is already known to most of our readers, but we cannot do better than quote the opinion of the Manawatu Times on the. manner in which this talented company pro-* duced the piece in Palmerston, " Miss Lawrence's representation of Lady Isabel and Madame Vine was a powerful one. She has evidently given most careful study to the character. In no detail was her acting overdone, and for the time the clever ■ actress held the mirror up to Nature, and was the jealous wife, the bitterly repentant woman, and the brokenhearted mother. Miss Lawrence gave her audience the impression that she felt all she said and did, and the effect was telling. Had the play depended upon her acting alone it would have been a success, but she was also well supported. Miss Louie Norris gave an amusing and capital representation of Cornelia, and was quite at home in the part, while Miss Lena Robinson acquitted herself well as Barbara Hare. Mr Gerald Dillon's representation of Mr Carlyle was very good, while Mr Kede as Sir Francis Levison did full . justice to the character of the polished villian.
