A FATAL VHSrvKE IN AMERICA. The Cleveland (Ohio, U.S.A.) Press '.! of Feb, 23, 1 883. publishes an account of a fatal surgical operation which has caused a great commotion among medical men throughout the whole country, Dr Thayer, phe most eminent surgeon in Cleveland, pronouncing' it scandalous. It appears tuat, a Mra King had been sufFehng for many years with some disease ofthesto-' mach which had resisted the treatsjjuent of all the physicians in attend-^ ance. Ihe disease commenced, w4.% i a slight derangement of the aigeM^iQn^ „ with a poor appetite, followefl |. : l» \ peculi ar indescri bable distress ia the r stomach, a feeling that has been described as a faint '"all trone" 1 '' a sticky slime collecting about 1 tne n teeth, causing a .disageeable taste; ; . especially in, the morning. ; This.:.' sensation was not removed by r fooa^, " but on the contrary, it was increasea. . The eyes then became tinged With.! yellow, and were sunken. After 1 awhile the hands and feet became cold and sticky — a cold perspiration . : There was a constant tired and languid feeling. Then followed* a dreadHil nervousness,, with glbomy forebodings. When rising suddenly there came a dizzy feeling like vertigo. After a timit the bowels became: costive, so that it was difficult to procure a movement without a catha tic. Soon followed o disposition to spit ap the food after eating, sometimes in a , sour, fermented condition. All this derangement caused a terrible palpi tation of the heart, so as r.o make the breathing difficult. Finally the pati-i ent, was Unable to retain any food' whatever, and there was constant pain in the abdomen. . All. prescribed remedies failing to give relief a consultation was held, when it was dedecided that the patient had a cancer in the stomach, and, in order to save the patient's life, an operation was performed by Dr Vance, in the p'reseneeof Dr Tuckerman, Dr Perrier, : Dr Arms. Dr Gordon, Dr Lapuer, and Dr Hulliwell, of the Police Board. The operation consisted in laying open the cavity of the abdomen and exposing the stomach, bowels, liver and pancreas. When this had been d>me, an examination of tho organs was made, but, to the horror . and dismay of the doctors, there was no cancer. When too late, the medical m»n discovered that they had made a terrible v istak". They sewed the part-* together and dressed .the wound that they bad made, but the woman sank from exhaustion and died in a few hours. How sad it umst.be tor the husband of this poor woman io know that his wife died from tlie effects ot a surgical operation tha.t ought nevor to have been performed. If this woman had taken the proper remedy f r d\spej>sia (for this is what the disease really was), she would have been living to-day. Sei'iel's Curative Svrnp, a remedy made ex~ pressly for dyspepsia or indegestioh, has restored many such ca^es to pier-;, -. tVct health after all other kind^ oi treatment have iailed.
