The Feilding Star. SATURDAY, SEPT. 26, 1885. Boxing Day

Our readers will observe from an extract, published to-day, from a Palmerston contemporary, that the Manawatu Jockey Club has arranged their programme for Boxing Day. It is therefore incumbent on the members of the Feilding Sports Committee to take their preliminary steps in order that they may not be behind their energetic neighbors in catering . for the amusement of pleasure seekers at the coming holiday season. The hopes which were at one time enter- ; tamed that Feilding would be allowed to enjoy a monopoly of Boxing Day 1 for her sports have now been abandoned. The committee of manage- ' ment have decided that the best thing they can do is to continue to give athletes the best programme and biggist money prizes issued by any similar association in the colony. By these they can always hope to command a large field of competitors and the con- ' sequent liberal patronage of the public, notwithstanding the counter [ attractions held out by our neighbors. We believe that under certain conditions rivalry is beneficial, and we are certain the continued and increasing popularity of our sports has been . owing in a great measure to the liberal display of energy en the part of the . officers made necessary by competition In asking the committee to call a meeting at once we aro only following established precedent, as the first 1 general meeting of the public to elect a new committee and officers has been always held early in October in each year.
