The Cleveland (Ohio, U.S.A.) Press of Feb, 23, 1883. publishes an account of a fatal surgical operation which has caused a great commotion among medical men throughout the whole country. Dr Thayer,-the most eminent snrgeon in Cleveland, pronouncing it scandalous. It appears that a Mrs King had been differing for many years with some disease of the stomach which had resisted the treatment of all the physicians in attend— ancp. 'I he disease commenced w^th a slight derangement of the digestion, with a poor appetite, followed by a peculiar indescribable distress in tbe stomach, a feeling that has been; described as a faint ''all trone" sensatipn a sticky slime collecting about the teeth, causing a disageeable tas^e, especially in the morning. This sensation was not removed by food, but on the cot trary, it was increased. The eyes then became tinged .with yellow, and were sunken. %ftpr awhile the hands and feet became cold and sticky — a cold perspiration. There was a constant tired and languid feeling. Then" followed: a ''reud'ul nervousness, with gloomy forebodings. When rising .suddenly there dime a dizzy feeling like Wrtig'-, Afreratim* the bowels became costive, so that it was difficult to procure a movement without a cathartic. Soon followed o disposition to. spit np the food aftor eating,. sometimes in r a sour, iermented condition. All this derangement caii-ed a terrible palpitation of the heart, so as to make tie breathing difficult. Finally the parent, was unable to retain any food whatever, and there was constant pain in the abdomen. All . prescribed remedies failing to give relief a consultation was held, when it was dedecided that the patient had a cancer in tbe stomach, and, in order to save the patient's life, an operation, was performed by Dr Vance, in the, presence of Or Tuckerman, Dr Perri.'r, Dr Arms, Dr Gordon, Dr Lapiinr, and Dr H»lliwell, of the Police Honrd. The operation consisted in laying open the cavity of the abdomen and' exposing the stomach, bowels, liver and pancreas. When this had been d-ne, an examination of fcho organs was marie, but, to the horror and dismay of the doctors, there was no cancer. When too late,, the medical men discovered that they had made a terrible nristakp. They sewei the parts toother and dressed tbe wound that they bad made, but the woman sank from exhaustion and died in a few hours. How sad it must be for tbe husband of this poor woman to know thai bis wife died from the effects of a surgical operation that ought never to have been performed. If this woman had taken the proper remedy fr dyspepsia (for this is what the disease really was), . she wpuld have been living tu-day.
